OVERSEER software update to OverseerFM

Overseer is a model that is used to calculate nutrient losses from farms and is one of the main requirements for farming land use consents in Canterbury. Most farmers have already had their farms modelled in Overseer with the help of a nutrient management consultant.

However, there are some changes to Overseer that farmers will need to be aware of.

From the end of June 2019, OverseerFM software will replace the existing Overseer software.

If you have had Overseer modelling done for your farm, get in touch with your nutrient management consultant to make sure everything is up to date and to get some help with transitioning your files in OverseerFM.

More detailed information of the Overseer update is included below.

What you need to know ahead of the Overseer software update

What is changing?

Overseer Limited have informed us that from the end of June 2019, OverseerFM software will replace the legacy Overseer software.

What does this change involve?

The legacy Overseer software uses XML files, which can be exported and shared.  By contrast, OverseerFM is based around an online Farm Account.  A key difference of the Farm Account approach is multiple users (who have permission) can now access the one account as needed.

Files and information stored in the legacy Overseer software will not automatically transfer to OverseerFM.  They will need to be manually uploaded by the account owner.  Additionally, XML files in Overseer versions 6.2.2 or earlier will not be compatible with OverseerFM.

What does this mean for you?

All farms required to generate an Overseer nutrient budget should have received a letter from Environment Canterbury notifying them of the change.  If you have not received a letter but believe you should have, please contact the Customer Services team at Environment Canterbury on 0800 324 636.

As mentioned, all Overseer XML files in versions 6.2.2 or earlier will not be compatible with OverseerFM.  These files will need to be updated to the latest Overseer version within the legacy Overseer, prior to being uploaded into OverseerFM.  To upload into OverseerFM, please register to create an OverseerFM account and upload the file to OverseerFM, while keeping a backup copy (XML) saved to your computer.  To create an OverseerFM account please visit https://fm.overseer.org.nz/#/pub/register.

If your files are already up to date then please register to create an OverseerFM account, and upload a copy of the file onto your new account. Please remember to keep a backup copy saved to your computer.

Who can help?

If you are unsure of any of your obligations relating to the OverseerFM software update, please contact your farm nutrient budget provider.

Key terms:
  • Legacy Overseer is the original Overseer software, which will terminate at the end of June 2019.
  • OverseerFM is the new Overseer software which has been available since mid-2018.
